Galaxy Z Flip: all about Samsung's next foldable phone

Galaxy Z Flip: all about Samsung's next foldable phone

As we head into February, all eyes are on the next flagship release. Samsung S20. The Korean giant is looking to use camera beasts this time around, offering features like 100x Space Zoom and Night Hyperlapse, but that's not all.

The second folding mobile phone samsung generation, Galaxy z flip It will also debut at the Galaxy Unpacked event on February 11 next week. There is also a lot of tricks to use in folding mobiles.

I bet most of you must have already heard of the Galaxy Z Flip. This Moto Razr-style foldable phone has been causing buzz on the internet for the past few weeks. We've seen a plethora of leaks, revealing just about everything from the design and specs to the price of this device.

So, with only 10 days left, here's everything you need to know about Samsung Galaxy ZFlip:

Second generation folding design with the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip

Samsung's folding beginnings began last year with the Galaxy Fold, which could be folded into a tablet format. It was a leap in terms of smartphone design, but the company is now launching a clamshell form factor with its second foldable.

The design is similar to the foldable Moto Razr that launched early last year and is built into a standard phone format rather than a tablet, which some might find more appealing.

Galaxy Z Flip: all about Samsung's next foldable phone

As you can see in the image above, the Galaxy Z Flip looks pretty dapper in a new purple gradient (there's also a matte black variant which you'll see below). I really like this prism effect and color variant, but putting that aside, there are a few things you might have noticed here:

  • An improved hinge design that will allow you to close the Z Flip fully, with no gaps or cracks in between.
  • A protective black plastic around the screen, which is similar to the Galaxy Fold but now has bumpers (look closely) to further protect the foldable panel.
  • Did you find a secondary external display? There's one right next to the cameras (clearly seen in leaked images) and it's rumored to be called the focusing screen. The same is said that It has a 1.05-inch Super AMOLED panel. and it will show the time, notifications and the viewfinder to take high resolution selfies.
  • As for the main screen inside, Samsung is beating Sony and Motorola. When unfolded, the Galaxy Z Flip is expected to feature a 6.7-inch Full-HD+ AMOLED display with a taller 22:9 aspect ratio and hole punch design.

Now, Samsung is said to have found a solution for the biggest complaint in the Galaxy Fold, namely the foldable screen protection layer. Even before the device went on sale, the Galaxy Fold's screen cracked and turned out to be fragile. The company introduced some minor changes to the design, both for the screen and the hinge.

Well, we can expect the folding screen of the Galaxy Z Flip to hold up better than the Fold like Samsung exchanging the more brittle plastic top layer for ultra-thin glass. The Korean giant recently trademarked the "UTG" (ultra-thin glass) logo that it will likely use to market its next foldable.

It will make the Galaxy Z Flip stand out while proving that the foldable screen is more durable and less prone to scratches.

Looking at additional hardware details, you can see that the Galaxy Z Flip includes a physical fingerprint scanner that also works as the power button. Volume control on the right, port USB Type C at the bottom, along with stereo speakers and no 3,5mm audio jack.

All things considered, we really like this foldable form factor and can't wait to get my hands on this device to see how easy it is to open and if the UTG screen holds up.

Specifications and features of the Samsung Z Flip

While initial speculation suggested that the Galaxy Z Flip will be a mid-range phone, recent leaks have revealed that it will in fact be a flagship mobile phone. Samsung's second foldable phone will be powered by the Snapdragon 855 Plus, along with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage.

Also, the Galaxy Z Flip will likely not have 5G connectivity support as revealed by the device's FCC listing.

It will run the company's OneUI 2.0 skin based on Android 10, and if you're not familiar with it, take a look at its coolest features here:

Front and selfie cameras

The renders show that the Galaxy Z Flip will feature dual cameras on the outside and just one camera on the inside, sitting in a hole in the center. Rumored dual-camera setup Pack a 12MP (f/1.8-f/2.4) dual-aperture primary lens and a 12MP (f/2.2) ultra-wide-angle camera. You can also expect to find a 10MP (f/2.4) selfie shooter on board.

In addition to the specs, I'd like to mention that Samsung will optimize the software to work in sync with the new foldable design. It will lock in two positions, fully open at 180 degrees and half open at 90 degrees.

OneUI 2.0 will adapt so that the last position is useful for video calls or capturing videos at odd angles. You'll see the viewer in the top half and the controls in the bottom half, like this:

battery + charge

The renders suggest that the Galaxy Z Flip will be quite stylish when folded. This means you shouldn't expect to see a huge battery under the hood. Leaks suggest that houses a 3300 mAh battery, which is divided into two halves: 2375 mAh and 925mAh.

While the battery size is average, it's the charging speeds that I find disappointing. The Galaxy Z Flip is expected to provide 15W wired fast charging support, along with 12W wireless charging and Wireless Powershare (4.5W), to charge other phones by placing it on top of the Samsung device.

Samsung should have offered at least 25W fast charging tech support on board its next foldable.

affordable folding

Coming to one of the biggest talking points, the Galaxy Z Flip's form factor allows Samsung to reduce the entry point for users who want foldables. So yes, the rumors might be right in saying that the Galaxy Z Flip will go on sale for 1.500 euros (about $1,650) in Europe.

It's about the same price as the foldable Moto Razr but affordable as the Galaxy Fold.

Galaxy Z Flip specs, features and pricing details

The Galaxy Fold launched last year and rolled off the platform in a matter of minutes. Therefore, users who want a premium phone and are ready to spend more than a salary would love to get their hands on the latest technology.

Galaxy Z Flip: Once again the folding Moto Razr!

Galaxy Z Flip will be the first foldable phone to be released in 2020. It is one of the most anticipated phones as it will push the foldable form factor. Rumored to feature a clamshell design, a more durable glass layer over the foldable screen, and a traditional form factor, the Galaxy Z Flip is set to not only take on the Moto Razr, but also match it.

The Galaxy Z Flip should offer more than just a dose of nostalgia, in the form of flagship-level performance at the $1500 price point.

So, are you excited for the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip launch next week? Do you think it is more feasible than its older brother, the Galaxy Fold?
