Google Play Store stopped showing app update notifications recently. While everyone was hoping it was a bug, a Google spokesperson told Android Police That was expected behavior. Which means you will no longer be notified about app updates. Well not really. There is a new app that brings app update notifications.
For those wondering why this was even significant. Because users install a variety of apps each day and often forget to use them, app update notifications served as an indirect way of reminding users that they still have an app.

Within AppNotifier, you can choose to display notifications for new app installs and app updates. And what is more interesting, you even get an option to enable notifications for loaded apps in the form of APK. Cool, right?
However, there are a couple of limitations with AppNotifier. Unlike the Google Play Store, you will not be notified when the app is installed. Instead, notifications will be sent once the installation process is complete.
Also, since the app relies on data from apps present on your phone, changes to the app name will not be reflected and the renamed app will be interpreted as a new app.
Personally, I don't miss app update notifications. But I am sure that those who use third-party theme engines like Substratum will find the lack of app update notifications inconvenient, as unexpected app updates could render an app unusable if an updated theme is not yet available.
