OnePlus Watch may arrive sooner than we think

Oneplus watch

Like many makers of new tech gadgets in the current year, OnePlus has been slowly and steadily building its ecosystem through a network of interconnected devices.

Along with OnePlus Android phones, we now have wireless headphones and Smart TVs. The next logical stop on the list would be a OnePlus-branded smartwatch, and the company is already working on it.

The information comes from a source on Twitter:

Rumors surrounding a OnePlus watch have been around since early 2016. The project never got off the ground and was scrapped because the company wanted to stay focused on mobile phones.

As you can see from the sketches below, the device would look and function like a regular smartwatch with a circular face and customizable straps.

We doubt that it will bring something extra to the market, in the form of new or at least innovative features in this field.

It's hard to speculate on something as so little is known about the actual watch or its specifications. We also got to see OnePlus launch a fitness tracker, rather than a smartwatch. The Tweet did say "fitness band," after all.

Companies like Xiaomi have made a lot of money selling fitness or activity wristbands and we don't see any reason why OnePlus wouldn't want to give it a try.

Is now a good time for a OnePlus Watch?

Short answer, yes. In 2016, OnePlus was still trying to find a foothold in the smartphone market. Now that they have established a firm foothold in various emerging markets like India, the company can focus on building an entire ecosystem around its products.

Also, the current state of Android wearables is a bit pathetic. An established brand like OnePlus will find many customers, especially users who use their phones. It must also be recognized that Xiaomi Watch, is about to show up.

Knowing that the plan has been in the works for years, OnePlus Watch may have spent all this time developing its own software for the upcoming watch.

I wouldn't blame them for waiting, given the current state of WearOS. Ideally, Google should start paying more attention to their wearables department, considering that they paid a hefty amount for purchase FitBit.
