Apple and Google crack down on Coronavirus apps

Google and Apple have started cracking down on fake malicious apps to combat new coronavirus-related misinformation in their app stores.

Apple is removing all mobile software related to the coronavirus that is not from recognized health organizations or the government, CNBC reports. Google, on the other hand, has stopped returning results if someone searches for coronavirus in its Play Store.

Some of these apps used public data from trusted sources like the World Health Organization (WHO) to create live dashboards or maps. "Some developers asked not to be identified to avoid further complications with Apple's review process"

In the Apple app store, the top result for "COVID 19" is a "virus tracker" app from a developer called Healthlynked with figures from the WHO and maps showing confirmed cases.

Google Play has published a website called "Coronavirus: Stay Informed" with suggested apps, including software from the CDC, Red Cross, and Twitter.

According to the report, some popular coronavirus-related Android apps are not available for iPhone. With claims related to bogus cures or prevention methods for coronavirus, like drinking bleach cures infections.
