It's important to note that installing Android 12 Developer Previews on a Pixel device carries certain risks. Since the build is not stable, you may experience performance issues or unexpected errors. We recommend that you install Android 12 DP2 on a secondary device or wait for a more stable version, i.e. Android 12 beta.

Steps to activate one-handed mode in Android 12

With that said, here's how to toggle Android 12 one-handed mode on Pixel devices:

  • Go to Android settings > System > Gestures
  • Select one hand mode and toggle Use one-handed mode
  • To use one-handed mode on Android 12, just swipe down at the bottom of the screen.

In the one-hand mode settings, you can disable Exit when switching apps which will keep the mode on until you manually turn it off. According to some tests, the switch is not doing anything, but we expect Google to fix this issue in the next Android 12 build.

There is also a one-hand mode timeout option in settings that will disable the feature after a certain amount of time of inactivity. You can set it to 4 seconds, 8 seconds, 12 seconds, or never.

Here's hoping that Android 12's one-handed mode is here to stay and isn't removed from the final build of Android 12.
