Facebook Lite starts rolling out dark mode on Android

Dark mode in Facebook Lite Android

Less than five years after its original launch in June 2015, Facebook Lite now has a dark mode. Even as the feature continues to elude most of the company's app users.

It is believed to have been originally reported by Android Police. Facebook Lite app on Android now has a dark mode button and that can be activated by users who prefer a dark theme. The option is reportedly available in the latest stable version of the Android app (v186) available on the Play Store.

In the absence of an official statement from Facebook, it's not immediately clear if the feature is just being tested at this time or rolling out universally.

However, it appears to be more widely available than dark mode for the original Facebook app, which has still only been rolled out to a handful of users despite being in testing for years.

To turn on Dark Mode in Facebook Lite, users will need to tap on the hamburger menu on the top bar and scroll down to the “Dark Mode” option under the “Settings” option.

As you can see from the screenshots above, the dark mode in Facebook Lite comes with more of a dark gray color than the AMOLED black that most people would have ideally wanted. But it still looks much better than the blue-black color implemented by WhatsApp.

It's worth noting here that some of the company's other main consumer-facing apps, including WhatsApp and Instagram, have already received dark mode.

The company has also long been teasing a revamped UI for its website with a Dark Mode option that is being A/B tested for the past few months.

So now that even Facebook Lite seems to be getting the dark mode feature, it will be interesting to see when the company launches into its main app.
