Google Chrome is about to bring back a feature that many of us have been missing: sharing groups of tabs. This feature was removed in 2021, but it will be available again, according to recent reports. In 2019, Google introduced the tab grouping feature in Chrome with which we could better organize our browsing windows. Shortly after, the functionality of sharing these tab groups with other users was added.
This feature allowed work teams, students, and other users to share sets of online resources faster. The bad news came in 2021 when Google decided to remove this feature without warning. Many users were extremely frustrated by this decision. Why did Google decide to remove this feature? We don't know, it remains a mystery to this day. Its removal came as a surprise, given that many people found it useful. Now, in 2024, Google is working to bring back this feature.
How will the new tab group sharing feature work in Google Chrome?
We learned that Chrome is bringing back the tab group sharing feature for user sharing Leopeva64 on X (formerly known as Twitter). He has revealed screenshots of this new functionality, the process to share groups of tabs in Chrome will be something simple to do. We will be able to group tabs just like we did before, and once the group is ready, a share button will appear at the top of the tab group window.
By pressing the share button, a menu will open where we can select email addresses of the people you want to share the tab group with. After entering their email addresses, an invitation will be sent so others can view and collaborate on the shared tab group. Chrome will also include a visual indicator that the tab group is shared, and offer options for managing tab groups, such as ending shared access or viewing recent activity.
More features to manage shared groups
Chrome will also allow you to manage groups that have been shared. This will include options to add or remove people from shared groups, as well as to End shared access when no longer neededThis way, we will have complete control over who can access the information and for how long.
The user interface will also be updated to show icons on top left from shared tabs, indicating that they are part of a shared group. This is an improvement over the previous version of the feature, as it makes it easier to quickly identify groups that are being shared with other users.
When will this feature be available?
The option to share groups of tabs in Chrome is still in development. For now, Google has not provided an official release date, and it looks like we'll have to wait a little longer to enjoy this functionality. The new feature is expected to be released first in beta versions of Chrome before being implemented in the stable version of the browser.
We'll be keeping an eye out for more updates from Google on this feature, as well as any new developments that may emerge during its development phase and We will keep you informed of everything.
